Firefly Curriculum: High School Astronomy/Space Science 1

A Christ-Centered Study of the Heavens, Space Science, and Faithful Stewardship

1 High School Science Credit w/optional lab

Course Description

Firefly Curriculum High School Astronomy/Space Science 1 is a Christ-centered, year long science course that introduces students to the observable universe and the scientific study of the heavens. Students explore celestial motion, the night sky, Earth’s place in space, the Moon, gravity, eclipses, tides, the solar system, planetary science, light, telescopes, spectroscopy, and astronomical imaging. Through sky observations, scientific models, data analysis, hands-on investigations, and mastery projects, students develop the skills needed to interpret evidence and distinguish observation from inference and worldview assumptions. The course encourages students to study the order, beauty, and complexity of creation with scientific curiosity, intellectual humility, and faithful stewardship.

This course is built around Firefly’s educational philosophy:

Christ → Creation → Order → Stewardship → Wisdom → Dominion

Students will learn that the universe is not random, meaningless, or unknowable, but ordered, intelligible, beautiful, and worthy of careful study because it was created and is sustained by Christ. Astronomy becomes an opportunity to practice observation, mathematical reasoning, model-building, data interpretation, scientific humility, and worshipful reflection.

The course is designed to align with national high school Earth and Space Science expectations, including the structure of the universe, Earth’s place in the cosmos, orbital motion, gravitational relationships, electromagnetic radiation, stellar processes, planetary science, space systems, engineering design, data analysis, and scientific modeling. Students will regularly distinguish between observation, interpretation, hypothesis, theory, worldview, and evidence.

To qualify as one high school credit students must complete the Chalkboard Textbook AS WELL AS the printable curriculum workbooks – located in the “Materials” tab of each lesson. To be awarded lab credit students must complete the included lab workbooks as well. Lab workbooks are included under lesson 1 “Materials” tab and are to be used alongside the student workbooks to count as a lab course.

Each lesson includes mastery-based progression, spiral review, critical thinking, real-world application, biblical reflection, and a capstone project. A separate lab workbook provides hands-on investigations, sky observations, modeling activities, data labs, engineering challenges, and reflective science journaling so the course can function as a complete high school science course with lab.
