High School Credit | 8th Grade/9th Grade/ Algebra 1 | Christ-Centered | National Standards Aligned
Course Description:
Algebra 1 is the study of relationships, structure, patterns, change, and mathematical reasoning. In this course, students move beyond Pre-Algebra fluency into formal Algebra 1 mastery. Students will use variables, equations, inequalities, functions, systems, exponents, polynomials, factoring, quadratics, radicals, rational expressions, and data models to understand and solve real-world problems.
This course is designed to prepare students for Geometry and Algebra 2 while cultivating careful reasoning, wise stewardship, thoughtful reflection, and confidence in God’s ordered creation.
Firefly Educational Philosophy:
Christ → Creation → Order → Stewardship → Wisdom → Dominion
Course Design Notes:
It is a 2 part course broken into Part 1 (First Semester) and Part 2 (Second Semester). This course assumes students have completed a strong Pre-Algebra course. Therefore, some topics are labeled Review-to-Mastery, meaning they briefly refresh essential skills before moving into Algebra 1-level complexity. Topics labeled Algebra 1 Expansion or Formal Algebra 1 Mastery should be developed more deeply, with direct instruction, guided practice, independent practice, real-world modeling, spiral review, and mastery assessment.
Spiral Review Expectations:
Each lesson should include regular review of prior skills, especially rational number operations, equation solving, graphing, functions, inequalities, exponents, proportional reasoning, and mathematical modeling. Spiral review should strengthen retention without turning Algebra 1 into a repeat of Pre-Algebra.
Biblical Integration Theme:
Algebra helps students recognize the order, structure, and relationships God has placed within creation. Students learn to reason carefully, communicate truthfully, solve problems faithfully, and use mathematical knowledge as an act of stewardship and service.
